Medicine
While all physicians share a commitment to patient care, different degree pathways—MD, DO, and MD/PhD—emphasize distinct philosophies, training experiences, and career outcomes. Exploring these options early can help you identify programs that align with your interests, values, and long‑term goals.
We encourage pre-med students and alumni to utilize the Health Profession Portfolio (Medical) as a place to learn about the requirements and customize your journey.
Dentistry
Unlike many health professions, dentistry combines clinical precision with a strong element of independent practice. Most dentists work in small practice settings with significant autonomy over patient relationships and business decisions. Whether you’re drawn to general dentistry or a specialty like orthodontics or oral surgery, understanding the landscape will help you find the right fit.

Veterinary Medicine
Veterinary medicine is one of the most diverse health professions in terms of scope. Graduates may go on to treat household pets, work with livestock and wildlife, serve in the military, or contribute to public health and biomedical research. This breadth of possibility makes early exploration especially valuable.
We encourage pre-veterinary students and alumni to utilize the Health Profession Portfolio (Veterinary) as a place to learn about the requirements and customize your journey.
Preparing to Apply
Wesleyan helps endorse applicants to medical, dental, and veterinary school via a collaborative process called the Institutional Letter of Support, also known as a Committee Letter.
It is important that you understand this process, its complexities, and how it supports and interacts with your application prior to your application year so that you do not miss any crucial deadlines.
It is strongly encouraged that pre-med students and alumni request an Institutional Letter of Support the fall prior to their application year.

A less-involved method of support, known as a Letter Packet, is available to those more than 5 years out from graduation, as well as anyone who does not meet the required deadlines, and to non-medical, -dental, and -veterinary health professions applicants. Wesleyan offers many avenues for students to receive grant funding for unpaid and underpaid internships, research projects, and other academic and career-focused needs.
