What is your current role? What was your journey in arriving there?
I am currently a first-year medical student, deeply immersed in the journey to become a physician with a focus on pediatric surgery. My path to this point has been diverse and enriching. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2022, I embraced various roles that shaped my understanding of medicine and research. I served as an assistant volleyball coach at Wesleyan, which honed my leadership and teamwork skills. I then worked as a research assistant at the Schizophrenia and Cognition Lab, where I delved into mental health research. My experience continued with clinical research at Baylor Scott and White Hospital and policy research at The Cicero Institute. Each role provided me with unique insights and skills that collectively prepared me for medical school.

What do you enjoy about your work? What challenges does your industry currently face?
What I enjoy most about my work is the collaborative environment and the holistic approach to medical education. Being part of a team that integrates clinical practice with fundamental science is incredibly rewarding and aligns with my interest in pediatric surgery. However, the field of medicine faces significant challenges, including addressing healthcare disparities, managing increasing patient loads, and navigating the complexities of healthcare policy. Staying adaptable and continuously learning are crucial to overcoming these challenges and improving patient care.

How did your time at Wesleyan influence your career choice/journey?
My time at Wesleyan University was transformative and instrumental in shaping my career path. The interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on holistic thinking expanded my perspective on medicine. Courses and experiences at Wesleyan encouraged me to consider the broader context of patient care, including environmental and community factors. This comprehensive view was pivotal in guiding me towards pediatric surgery and has influenced my approach to medical education and practice.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about entering your industry?
For students aspiring to enter the medical field, my advice is to work hard but remain resilient despite the complexities of the medical school application process. Every individual’s path to becoming a physician is unique, so embrace your personal journey and experiences. Engage with a diverse range of people and learn from their perspectives. Networking and seeking mentorship can provide invaluable insights and support. Above all, stay passionate and committed to your goals, and remember that the journey is as important as the destination.
