What was the name of the organization you worked for over the summer?
Jonny Marlow Photography
What was your role and what did you work on?
I assisted Jonny Marlow in his photography studio for various spec and fashion shoots. My responsibilities included painting the cyc wall, setting up strobe lights and lighting modifiers, assembling seamless backgrounds, and generally being of service in and around the studio.
What was a highlight of your experience?
Though he mostly shoots digital photography now, Jonny Marlow shoots as much film photography as he can. He has a huge plethora of gear in his studio, and has a large 4×5 film camera that he had not used in years. When I asked him if he would be interested in teaching me how to use it, he was excited about the idea. On the day of a photoshoot, he came in one hour beforehand to teach me how to assemble and shoot on the 4×5 camera. Now, we have some incredible 4×5 polaroids to commemorate the morning we spent shooting and experimenting together.
How did your summer experience impact you?
This experience gave me an unfiltered insight into the world of commercial/fashion photography that I otherwise would not have had access to. I developed new technical skills that will aid in my own personal artistic advancement, as well as professional connections that will help me build a creative career in the future.
