What is your current role? What was your journey in arriving there?
I am currently on the Global Integrated Marketing team at Calvin Klein where I specialize in Product Marketing. I work closely with cross-functional teams including Merchandise, Design, Global Creative, PR and regional teams to develop the stories of products across Apparel and Accessories categories. My past professional experience has been in consulting, business strategy, product development and creative marketing.
What do you enjoy about your work? What challenges does your industry currently face?
My job requires me to work cross-functionally with various creative and strategy teams which has allowed me to learn how to bring not only a design idea to fruition, but also how to communicate the nuances of product features to a global audience. I enjoy learning about the inspiration behind a season, how this influences design, and how to combine each team’s input on a product into one consumer facing story.
How did your time at Wesleyan influence your career choice/journey?
Wesleyan taught me how to take in information from a myriad of mediums including film, visual art, performance art, and literature as well as how to synthesize my own interpretation of my experiences and learnings to communicate my perspective to a diverse audience. I am grateful for the American Studies Department for allowing me to explore my interests in Media and Culture. I utilize the skills I gained in understanding how media influences consumer behavior in my role everyday.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about entering your industry?
Follow your passions and be a sponge! Use your free time to learn about the industries that interest you through articles, podcasts, conferences and connect with as many professionals as possible. You never know who can help open a door for you. Take the time to understand which companies are creating products that you are passionate about, and even if you cannot break into an industry right out of college, try to find a role that will allow you to enhance a transferable skillset.
