Sumreen Moughal ’25 has extensive experience in digital media and marketing through campus jobs in several academic, administrative, and student-facing departments on campus. She won the 2025 Exceptional Student Employee of the Year Award for her dedication and creativity in spearheading outreach initiatives and her thoughtful approach to showcasing the Wesleyan community.

In what ways has your campus job contributed to your personal, academic, or professional growth and aspirations? What skills have you gained?

In my occupation as a Social Media and Marketing Intern, I have had the opportunity to learn hands-on the technical skills behind managing digital platforms. I have always had an interest in marketing, and this position has assisted me in understanding how that passion can transform and translate into tasks such as content creation, audience engagement, designing graphic content, and spearheading outreach initiatives. This role solidified my professional aspirations of pursuing a career in marketing while equipping me with transferable skills such as team collaboration, adaptation, project management, problem solving, and strategic planning.

Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from your campus employment journey?

My most memorable experience from my campus employment journey was when I attended the thesis celebration on the steps of Olin Library and filmed authentic, genuine moments between people who had accomplished an immense milestone in their lives. Having the opportunity to capture and showcase a special moment of joy between seniors was an experience that reminded me of the impact that storytelling can have through digital tools. It impacts not just the students who can feel like they are vicariously living in the moment and feeling the emotion, but also inspires others to imagine themselves potentially reaching that milestone too.

What advice would you give to students who are seeking or starting their campus employment journey?

The biggest piece of advice for students who are seeking or starting their employment journey on campus is to apply yourself to every opportunity that presents itself, regardless of whether it aligns with your career goals and aspirations. Every occupation can provide you with a skillset and nurture you with valuable skills, while also expanding your professional network and allowing you to explore interests that you may not have considered. Always show up with curiosity and eagerness to learn more, because any opportunity can lead to a door, and put your best foot forward – these experiences can be memorable and life changing.

Sumreen won 2025 Exceptional Student Employee of the Year Award, with nominations by several supervisors. Read the nominations below:

Anastasia Wright, The University Communications Social Media Specialist:

Sumreen is such a light to have in the office that when she’s not there, people are constantly asking “Where’s Sumreen?” When she’s not around, we use her catch phrases that she always says such as “real” and “facts.”

Although she’s only worked here since the start of the fall semester and it’s only 6 hours a week, she has made such a difference in Wesleyan’s social media. She’s the most reliable student worker I have, showing up on time every single day, never calling out (which of course is okay if she’s sick), and always ready to work.

Usually, I have to give specific students specific tasks because they’re good at some things and not good at others, but with Sumreen, I can give her any task and she’ll execute. Whether it’s to go shoot videos or photos on campus, or plan TikToks, or pull analytics stats for posts. She’s not afraid to assert her ideas and creativity into plans and her outgoingness is really effective in really getting good stories for social media. Anytime I need a specific person to feature on campus, I can ask Sumreen and within 10 minutes she can give me the name of someone either she knows or a friend of a friend.

I am very sad that Sumreen is graduating now after only having her for such a small time, but I know she’ll be super successful in whatever role she decides to take on.

Professor Mary Alice Haddad, The John E. Andrus Professor of Government and Chair of the Government Department:

I am delighted to nominate Sumreen Moughal for Student Employee of the Year. She has been an extraordinary employee, serving as Creative Content Coordinator for the Government Department and Office Assistant for the Frank Center for Public Affairs. In both positions, Sumreen has consistently demonstrated exceptional creativity, responsibility, and dedication.

As Creative Content Coordinator, Sumreen has been instrumental in managing our Instagram account, @wesgov, developing engaging content, and helping our Administrative Assistant, Susan Lundgren-Regan, launch our quarterly newsletter. Her leadership in the Government Majors Committee has contributed to many, many successful events—an attendance of 500+ people so far this year.

In her role as Office Assistant for the Frank Center for Public Affairs, Sumreen has exhibited extraordinary reliability and a strong work ethic, consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. She has endured cold or rainy conditions to ensure food deliveries, and all last month served food to others with a smile even when fasting for Ramadan. Sumreen’s weekly tasks, including refilling printers, has kept operations running smoothly.

As a first-generation, Muslim, woman of color student, it is so vital in this moment that her contributions are publicly recognized. So often, the better she does her job, the less she is visible. It is so very important for us to demonstrate publicly that we value her and her contributions in making the government department, and the whole university, a better place. I urge you to award her the Student Employee of the Year.

Susan Lundgren, The Administrative Assistant of the Government Department and Frank Center for Public Affairs Building Steward:

I am delighted to support Sumreen’s nomination for the Student Employee of the Year. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Sumreen in her roles as Creative Content Coordinator for the Government Department and Office Assistant for the Frank Center for Public Affairs. In both positions, Sumreen has consistently demonstrated exceptional creativity, responsibility, and dedication.

As Creative Content Coordinator, Sumreen has been instrumental in managing our Instagram account, @wesgov, developing engaging content, and helping me to launch our quarterly newsletter. Her leadership in the Government Majors Committee has contributed to successful events like the election debates and Election Day viewing party.

In her role as Office Assistant for the Frank Center for Public Affairs, Sumreen has exhibited extraordinary reliability and a strong work ethic. From assisting with the organization of supplies during the center’s opening to handling setup and cleanup for faculty luncheons, she has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty. Her willingness to endure cold or rainy conditions to ensure food deliveries for events demonstrates her commitment. Sumreen’s weekly tasks, including refilling printers, has kept operations running smoothly.

One of Sumreen’s most remarkable qualities is her honesty and proactive approach to problem-solving. She is always willing to offer thoughtful suggestions, whether it’s recommending food options that better meet student preferences or conducting research on the senior gift. Her ability to identify areas for improvement and provide constructive feedback has made her an invaluable team member in both of her roles.

Sumreen’s creativity, leadership, and unwavering work ethic make her the ideal candidate for this award.
