Guide to the English Requirement for Health Professions Students

Medical schools differ in how they interpret the “English” requirement. While many expect one year of coursework in English, others may accept writing-intensive or humanities-based classes instead.

Use this guide to assess whether your courses are likely to fulfill most schools’ expectations, and always confirm individual policies through the AAMC Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR) database (or comparable resources through ADEA, AAVMC, etc.) before finalizing your plans.

If you are not subscribed to the full version of the MSAR, you can still access information about individual schools’ pre-requisites via the “Premedical Coursework Chart” on the MSAR Reports page.
