Position Summary
The Wesleyan Department of Philosophy seeks to hire 1 Undergraduate Course Assistant to support PHIL290 Philosophical Logic for the 2024 Fall Semester. This is a second course in logic, covering first-order logic with identity, its standard semantics, a natural deduction proof theory, soundness, completeness, and some simple model theory. The emphasis will be on a philosophical conception of the bases of mathematical logic and on some uses of mathematical logic in contemporary analytic philosophy.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a weekly 2-hour problem set session.
- Attend a weekly CA training session.
- Help students with problem sets and questions about course materials.
- Grade problem sets.
Desired Skills and Qualifications
Successful candidates have typically earned at least an A- in .MATH243, Mathematical Logic and MATH241, Set Theory, or equivalent graduate courses. Mathematics and Computer Science majors, as well as graduate students, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Schedule and Availability
- Fall 2024 only.
- Course Assistants work an average of 5 hours per week, Sept 4 2024 to Dec 16 2024.
- The following schedules will vary depending on the section’s class time:
- M 1:20pm – 4:10pm, OR M 6:40pm – 9:30pm
- T 1:20pm – 4:10pm
- W 1:20pm – 4:10pm
- TH 1:20pm – 4:10pm
- The position requires in-person attendance at all times.
- Department Location: Russel House.

Performance Evaluation
Course Instructor will meet regularly with undergraduate or graduate CAs to evaluate performance and expectations.
