What is your current role? What was your journey in arriving there?
As Senior Director of Business Development and Workforce Partnerships, I manage a portfolio of employer and training partners in the context of employment services, one of multiple social services provided by Henry Street Settlement. The mission is to open doors of opportunity for community members who may have a history of barriers to economic security and mobility.
Wesleyan provided me an opportunity during the summer of junior year through funding to intern at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. The internship planted seeds for my career in advocacy and empowering communities who needed their voices raised. Law school led to a stint in criminal defense law by way of the Legal Aid Society, followed by additional career exploration leading to building positive relationships to create impact.
What do you enjoy about your work? What challenges does your industry currently face?
My current work allows me to focus on building positive relationships for the benefit of those needing connection to social capital and career pathways.
Once perpetual challenge is funding and resources for programs that will prepare individuals for good career pathways.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about entering your industry?
Please reflect on your personal values and whether your desired career can align with them. Focus not just on academic, professional and career goals but also on personal, financial and spiritual goals.
How did your time at Wesleyan influence your career choice/journey?
Wesleyan University validated my desire to contribute to a society that would value diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
