What is your current role? What was your journey in arriving there?
I am the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer for Tomasetti. I studied Earth Science, with an aspiration to do science journalism and I worked in journalism for about 10 years before I switched to medical writing and editing. I ended up in communications for publishing and technical firms.

What do you enjoy about your work? What do you struggle with?
I enjoy helping others articulate complicated and nuanced ideas and inspiring a team to achieve things they thought were beyond their grasp. In my current position, a struggle I encounter is to determine the “right” strategy based on organizational readiness–sometimes what an organization should do is different than what it is ready to do.

Do you have any advice for students thinking about entering your industry?
If money is really important, go into finance or law. If your biggest thrill is watching the lights come on in someone else’s eyes, then this industry is a good choice.

How did your time at Wesleyan influence your career choice/journey?
The “what” at Wesleyan almost didn’t matter. The “how” mattered most. Whether it was in Louis Mink’s Kant symposium or Peter Patton’s sedimentology seminar what mattered most was a rigorous and critical frame of mind.
