Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from supervising student employees?

My favorite event that WesWell hosts, the Sex Carnival, was an idea from a previous intern and it is now our most popular event! When our previous intern first led the Sex Carnival, we reserved all the tables in Usdan and had a few activities. Now the Sex Carnival needs Beckham Hall to host 20+ tables with educational games, free sexual health tools, information on sexual health, and more on topics such as sexual education, reproductive health, pleasure, and sexual violence prevention. We regularly have 200+ folks who want to attend now. I love the creativity that our student employees bring to our team and the ripple effect that their work and ideas have on our community and with regards to the Sex Carnival. I’m so happy we have such a fun event to help break the stigma around discussions of sex and sexual health.

How do you think on-campus jobs contribute to students’ professional development and goals?

The work you will do in your on-campus jobs will serve you for years to come. You may not be working directly in what you hope your future career will be, but you are learning soft and transferable skills that will help set you apart in future applications. At WesWell, student employees will become Certified Peer Educators and learn event planning, health communication skills, public speaking/facilitation skills and more. Take your role as a student employee seriously, you play an important role on your team. Also remember that {professional} staff are happy to mentor students and support you in your future endeavors!

How does your department’s campus jobs help you and your students impact change within the university or broader community?

WesWell staff really value student employees because you all have a perspective of health and wellness on campus that we cannot see. Students working with our office really help lead programming and the information that is shared because we want to make sure we are sharing information that is relevant to the student body. We also encourage our student employees to lead events and programs based off of what they see the health and wellness needs of campus are. The work you do at WesWell will have a continuous ripple effect to better the health of our campus!
