What is your favorite part about working with Wesleyan student employees?

Student employees bring passion and curiosity to their work here. They ask great questions and I love to get their impressions of our authors and books.

Can you share any memorable experiences or achievements from supervising student employees?

Over the years, a number of our student employees have gone on to careers in writing, editing and publishing: Allison Lorentzen, Lisa Ko, Jessica Holahan, Sallie Fullerton, and many others. Two recent graduates are editing chapbooks for the press.

What advice would you give to students who are seeking or starting their campus employment journey?

Be realistic about your time commitment and don’t over-promise. Show up for the hours you sign up to do; your supervisor is counting on you. The relationships you form at your on-campus job, and the experience you gain there, can help you now and long after you graduate.

How do you think on-campus jobs contribute to students’ professional development and goals?

Any campus job, whether or not it’s directly related to your career goals, can provide a home base on campus. Wesleyan is full of great people, and a job is an opportunity to get to know some of them. Often your manager may become a mentor, and can provide references when you are ready to take your next steps.
