Academic Tutor

Tutors create a supportive learning community dedicated to helping students succeed in their courses. This can be through workshops, one-on-one tutoring sessions, and/or supplemental office hours that provide further support outside of course times. Tutors assist students with a variety of tasks from learning how to use a particular software to crafting the perfect essay. Tutors may work with Wesleyan undergraduate/graduate students, or with local K-12 students who participate in Wesleyan programs. Every academic department has Course Assistant positions, but these opportunities fluctuate depending on each department’s funding and course needs.

Research Assistants work closely with professors on research projects to collect and analyze data across a wide variety of disciplines. Research provides a great opportunity for hands-on academic exploration and in-depth exposure to a specific field. Office Assistant & Facility Monitors

Office Assistants have a wide range of tasks specific to their department’s needs. They often staff the front desk and assist with walk-in inquiries, emails, and phone calls. They may help with scanning and copying documents, filing and record-keeping, organizing the office space, running administrative errands, and miscellaneous tasks like event support and social media assistance. Most departments have a student employee Office Assistant who works closely with professional staff to conduct administrative operations.

Similarly, Facility Monitors staff the welcome desk of campus facilities and common spaces to assist with basic operations. They may open and close facility spaces, track attendance, provide information to passerby, and ensure that facility rules are followed.

Coordinators may be tasked with executing campus events smoothly and efficiently. They often have to juggle multiple tasks at once and coordinate between collaborators/vendors. Library Assistant

Library Assistants monitor library facilities and common spaces, answer questions for passersby, and assist the library with basic administrative tasks. They are integral to the organization and management of book inventories, assisting with sorting, shelving, and finding missing materials. They assist patrons by checking materials in/out, communicating library policies, and troubleshooting copiers/printers.

There are additional library positions that assist with special projects, such as repairing damaged books, digitizing materials for online collections, and caring for unique collections. There are multiple departments that hire Library Assistants at the Science Library and Olin Library. Additionally, some academic departments may hire Library Assistants to assist with their smaller, department-specific library collection.

Some Event Staff may be hired to photograph an event, interpret for panelists, or other specialized tasks. Event Staff may be hired for short-term programs that occur once annually, or they may be hired to staff a series of events throughout the year.
